[pgpool-general: 8706] what is pgpool-II "extensions" RPM package used for?

Hi

In the PgPool-II docs, it says that when installing from RPMs then one
must install "externsions" package on each PostgreSQL server.

What is this package for?
Is it required if using only connection pooling and load balancing?

We have separate servers for PostgreSQL and for PgPool and would
rather not install packages on PostgreSQL server if not needed. But
the documentation does not say what is extensions package is for....
