[pgpool-general: 7890] Recovery without disconnect

When I have a postgresql node fail pgpool switches the primary node as it should. However I have found that any existing database connections get reset. I can see how this may be required given that the socket from pgpool to the backend needs to be recreated. Is this expected or is there a way to configure pgpool to keep database connections open across failures?
